Curbside Collection
WasteZero manages more municipal Trash Metering programs than any other company in the United States. Our curbside system is an advanced, turn-key form of Pay-As-You-Throw, designed with ease of implementation in mind that has communities achieving some of the highest waste diversion and recycling rates in the nation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency calls Trash Metering "the single most effective change that could be made" to a curbside program; implementing Trash Metering has "a larger impact on recycling than adding additional materials, changing frequency of collection, or other changes and modifications to programs."

WasteZero provides cities of all sizes and demographics a simple cost saving solution for reducing waste and increasing recycling. With the WasteZero System, residents pay only for what they discard, creating a natural incentive to recycle more and discard less. To throw away their trash, households use official municipal trash metering bags that they purchase from area retailers.

Curbside Trash Metering communities generate about half the waste of communities that leave the cost of trash in the tax base or in a fixed fee. A 2010 study reported by the EPA found that in curbside Trash Metering municipalities an average of 467 pounds per capita was disposed of compared to 918 pounds per capita in non-Trash Metering municipalities – or 49 percent less waste generation in the Trash Metering communities.

The EPA calls those results "staggering."

"Residents in PAYT communities generate 49 percent less waste than residents in non- PAYT communities," reports the EPA. "Therefore 49 percent less waste is sent to landfills or waste to energy facilities, thus saving 49 percent in overall tip cost."

The WasteZero System has been voted in by a rapidly growing number of municipalities – some 300 communities in the United States – that are, as a result, diverting hundreds of thousands of tons of municipal solid waste per year. In addition to reducing natural resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use, WasteZero municipalities are also benefiting financially – from tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue and savings.
Metering = Common $ense
Traditionally, municipal solid waste collection and disposal services have been financed through property taxes or by fixed annual fees charged to households.
