Kristen Brown

Vice President, Waste Reduction Strategy


Kristen Brown, a recognized national expert on solid waste reduction and recycling incentive programs, leads WasteZero’s municipal partnership activities in several Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

She has almost three decades of experience working for manufacturers of recycled packaging in both the United States and Europe. Most recently, Kristen founded and served as President of MY ECO, an incentive-based consumer waste reduction program focused on increasing the use of reusable grocery bags.  Prior to that, she was a residential solid waste reduction consultant under contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she led the American Big Cities SMART campaign and designed the EPA SMART Benefit Evaluation Tool.  Previously, Brown served as Vice President of Municipal Market Development at Waste Zero.

Kristen has served as a consultant for Connecticut’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee, the New Mexico Recycling Coalition, and many individual municipalities. In 2009, she was appointed by the Governor to SC’s Recycling Market Development Advisory Council, where she serves as Vice Chair and as a member of the Policy and Education committee.  Brown has authored many trade journal articles based on her research into the critical link between financial incentives and sustainable recycling behavior change and has appeared on national programs such as the Today Show, The Talk, and Good Morning America.

Kristen holds a BA in Psychology from Miami University.
